So I noticed that I used to write about things, subjects, singulars. Now I just vomit out paragraphs datailing the minutia of my days.
Sorry about the puke on your shoes.
Anyway, yesterday…
Spent a lot of time nursing my pained glands and trying not to fall asleep every few minutes. Whatever’s been bothering me seems to have cleared up for now. David brought me Chipotle and we watched Fawlty Towers on dvd. My only question about the show is ‘if the guy dislikes owning a hotel so very much, why does he own a hotel???’. Yeah, pointless question, I know.
Started, tore out, restarted, tore out, picked a new pattern, started, tore out….trying to make a scarf for Jessi, just cannot find the right pattern. Let me make a small, crochet related complaint that none of you will care about…the ‘F’ sized hook is 3.75mm in size ‘G’ sized hook is 4mm in size, this is a nice move up in gauge size. The next jump up, the ‘H’ sized hook is 5mm, this is a full millimeter in width. I want a 4.5mm hook! I want something between G and H. It seems like such a petty thing, but when you’re trying to find the right gauge, a half a millimeter can make a great deal of difference. I will often take a new ball of yarn and make a few swatches with different hooks just to see which is more suited to the yarn. Right now I am working with peruvian cotton, feels nice, looks good, but is not bound very well and will untwist easily so a smaller gauge is better.
Sorry about that.
Last night David performed at Balls Cabaret again. He sang bits and pieces of songs that he has and is working on. He sang about poop, Robert Frost, moosalamoos, a horse’s ass, llamas and a racetrack. It was very funny and he’s just so damned cute up there.
We ended up staying pretty late, David and his friends nerded it up talking about 80’s sitcoms. My god, they knew all the theme songs to all the shows, they knew the theme song to Mork and Mindy!!!
Needless to say, we got home late, got to bed late and got up LATE. I feared we would be late for our date at the dog park but I got a message that levi was sick and with the wet wet snow I decided to forgo what would certainly be a very muddy afternoon.
Instead we went to ‘breakfast’ at 4pm and then grocery shopping. You know how you run out of the essentials at the same time? Stupid things like canned tomatoes and sesame oil. Stocked up like mad, it cost too much all around. AND the guy bagging the groceries forgot to put (presumably) one bag in the cart so now we have to go back to get the bread flour, the gladware, the rawhides and some band aids. What a pain.
In the happy side, I picked up a multigrain blend for making multigrain bread and made my first loaf tonight. Excellent stuff.
Came home, made 2 kinds of croutons with the last bit of the last loaf of bread, did some dishes, made salads with a plum/ginger vinaigrette, read my book for a bit and took the dogs out.
Exciting, no?

It is my opinion that marginalizing crocheters is a bad move on the part of yarn stores everywhere. Don’t delegate my pattern books to a dusty shelf in the corner, don’t store the crochet thread in a cabine that is unpoenable for being under a stack of crap, don’t just show gauge swatches in knit. Share the road! Still, didn’t stop me from buying yarn, thread, lace hooks and beading needles. oh well.
Soon, I must go make split pea and ham soup for my lunches and some buns for the hell of it and then later a moroccan squash stew with quinoa.
Preiously this week i’ve made stuffed eggplant (incredible!!) and kabocha squash mol with seasoned black beans, rice and roasted carrots. I’m getting back into the swing of cooking.
Okay, I’m off to be domestic. Laundry, dishes, crocheting, soup making and squash roasting calls my name.
Lost In Translation
So, Mr Weatherman, this morning…remember when you were going on and on about the crazy storm that was headed this way? Remember that? I distinctly got the impression that there would be so much snow coming down that time would literally stand still! I was sure I would wake up to find my head cracked open and my skull stuffed full of malignant frozen precipitation. I know this century is still young and declaring a snowfall to be the “storm of the century” allows you a certain amount of room since there’s really not that many winters to compare it to…
Am I to assume that when you made these bold statements regarding the weather, what you actually meant was “might get a tad chilly tonight…wear a hat”? Because there is NO SNOW out there. None. True, I had a bit of a fluff on the windshield this morning, but the wipers took care of that. Where’s the gigantic storm that is supposed to wipe us all out? I was thinking Jake Gyllenhall was going to show up and save my ass from the extreme weather.
There is no snow. None. Not on the sidewalks, not on my car. Let’s be clear, i don’t mind so much, when there is no snow I can clearly see where my neighbors have still not yet removed the ice from their sidewalks so I can avoid falling down while walking the dogs. I don’t mind mornings where I do not have to clear a pile of snow off my car. What bugs me is the near apocalyptic and somewhat apoplectic freak out regarging the weather.
In other news…ah not much. Ordered another crochet stitch encyclopedia today, this one has more lace patterns both traditional and filet. Changed the dogs names to Muffin Top (g) and Egg Beater (m).
I have a clump of beautiful shiny orange crochet thread here in one gigantic tangle. It came that way. Any advice for getting it apart? I’s really like to use it, it’s lovely stuff.
And of course, gave away three crocheted items this week and forgot to take pictures of any of them. I suck.

Molasses oat bread is good bread. Hearty, chewy, lots of flavor. Goes great with muscadine jam. Yum.
Nothing of note to report, really. It was a nice long weekend for me. I took friday off and I had today off and it was a nice rest for my addled brain.
My brain has just been obsessed with the crocheting. It’s all I think about. I’m constantly on the lookout for new patterns and designs, and I can tell you without a doubt that there are a lot of crappy designs and patterns out there.
I have about 8 million different projects I want to do. i want to make scarves based on lace and edging designs, I want to make lace edging for pillow cases, i want to learn filet crochet and make gifts for people, I want to join forces with someone who can make purses and crochet flowers to be attached to the purses…and on and on and on.
I ended up not going to the crochet class as I came down with a rather uncomfortable bladder infection that day, but the next wave starts up soon enough.
I also found the pattern for my next scarf and I just hope i have enough yarn on hand for it. Anyone wanna be my yarn patron? I’m particularly fond of the Noro brand Lily cotton/silk blend in solid colors (not a fan of variegated yarn for intricate work). It’s what i am using on the scarf project right now and that stuff is a dream. Completely smooth, a nice sheen, braided instead of twisted. I’ve been searching eBay for deals on it, but it seems the best deals are either on ugly colors or variegated colors. Sigh.
On the other hand, cotton thread for lace is super cheap on eBay. I’m a little obsessed.
Dammit. I wish I had more interesting things to talk about, but it’s winter and I’m chill and I get all nesty in the winter. It’s the quiet life, and I am happy.
maybe I was wrong???
I always tell people I’m not creative. I usually think it’s true. And yet…
I realized that I regularly take crochet patterns and modify them to suit my needs. I can mix and match different patterns to make new ones whenever I need to. I made a bunch of scarves based on patterns I got from my baby blanket books. Right now I am converting a pattern for lace edging into a scarf (yeah, I’m ripping out yesterday’s attempt, it’s not bad, it’s just not what I was going for).
I can actually be creative. Most of the food I make for parties are recipes invented by or modified by me, including my rack of lamb dinner, the stuff I made for my housewarming party and most of my curries. A lot of the things I make are not big stretches, it’s not exactly difficult to make a veggie curry, it’s really one step up from the bachelor stir-fry, but it is rare that I use recipes and when I do, I usually modify them.
So yeah, this is my “go me!” post. I can actually do creative things!
The other cool thing is that in doing this lace edging scarf, I ABSOLUTELY want to make this same pattern as actual lace edging and sew it on to pillow cases as gifts. And you know what? That is SO OLD LADY!
